Listening check

5 short clips · about 2 minutes · sound on

Each clip is a few seconds of real Tamil from YouTube. Listen, then tap what you think they said. There's no wrong-answer buzzer; it's a level check, not a test.

Headphones help.

How to use it

  2. Tap what you heardPick the meaning that matches, or "I didn't catch it". There's no penalty for guessing wrong; it's a level check, not a test.

What this checks

This is a quick read on listening comprehension, the skill most heritage learners and beginners are missing. The clips are real Tamil videos (a hostel lunch vlog, a children's story, a college "get ready with me") ordered from easier to harder, the same kind of material Bumi is being built around.

It isn't a formal test, and five clips can't measure everything. It won't tell you about reading, writing or speaking. What it can tell you is whether natural-speed Tamil is mostly noise, partly clear or mostly clear to you right now, which is the most useful thing to know when choosing what to watch next.

Why listening first

Research on second-language learning keeps finding that comprehensible input, meaning lots of listening and reading you can mostly follow, drives acquisition. Our post on comprehensible input for Tamil explains what the studies say and how to find Tamil at the right level.

Questions, answered

Is my answer data stored?

Your answers stay in your browser. We count anonymous events (started, which step, completed) to improve the check, but never which sentence you typed or heard, and nothing personal.

The clip won't play. What can I do?

The clips play from YouTube. If YouTube is blocked on your network or by an extension, the check falls back to showing the Tamil sentence in script and English letters so you can still answer.

How accurate is the level?

It's a rough guide from five clips: good for picking a starting point, not a certificate. Retake it in a few weeks to see the difference.
