How to use it

- Learn the monthsThe twelve Tamil solar months with roughly where they fall in the Gregorian year.
- Use the wordsToday, yesterday, tomorrow, week, month and year at the bottom of the page.
Two calendars at once
Tamil speakers use the Gregorian calendar for most of daily life, but the traditional Tamil solar calendar is still used for festivals, weddings, temple events and horoscopes. Its year starts in mid-April with சித்திரை (chiththirai) ‘Chiththirai’, and each month begins when the sun enters a new zodiac sign, so month starts drift by a day or so from year to year.
That's why this page labels the Tamil date as approximate: it uses month start dates computed for each year, not a printed panchangam, so it can be a day off near a month boundary. For a wedding date or a festival, check a printed Tamil calendar (பஞ்சாங்கம் (panjaangam) ‘almanac’).
Days of the week
Every weekday ends in கிழமை (kizhamai) ‘day of the week’, and in speech it is often dropped: you'll hear "thingal" or just "Monday". Days are named after the sun, moon and planets, like their English and Latin cousins.
Guides for this tool
Questions, answered
What is the first month of the Tamil year?
Chiththirai (சித்திரை), which starts in mid-April. Tamil New Year (Puththaandu) falls on its first day, usually 14 April.
Why is the Tamil date marked approximate?
Tamil solar months start when the sun enters a new zodiac sign, which can shift by a day between years. This page computes the month start dates for each year rather than reading a printed panchangam, so it can be a day off near a month boundary.
How do you say "today" in Tamil?
Written Tamil uses indru (இன்று); in speech you will mostly hear innaikku (இன்னைக்கு).
